Membership
South Carolina Association of School Nurses (SCASN) is unified with National Association of School Nurses (NASN). Membership in NASN/SCASN:
I. Strengthens nursing influence on national public policy affecting children's health issues and advancement of school nursing practice.
Examples of national influence through NASN's legislative efforts:
- Inclusion of school nurses in the language of the new No Child Left Behind Act (reform of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965)
- Recognition for school nurses' vital contribution in State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP)
- Identification of school nurses as important responders in bioterrorism.
II. Supports the solidarity of our unique specialty practice and enhances the skills of grassroots school nurses and supervisors. NASN prepares current trainings, position statements, issue briefs and publications on school nursing and school health issues.
III. Enhances the interrelationships between state and national nursing organizations. Accordingly, NASN participates in the school nurse coalition, provides cutting edge information to state affiliates and other vested partners in school health, and has increased our collaboration through additional grant associates and dialogue with national organizations.
IV. Provides as a benefit of membership The Journal of School Nursing and the NASN Newsletter, toll-free telephone numbers to NASN offices, and full-time staff to respond to membership questions.
